The
Bears went toe to toe with the NFC North Champs for a half before everything
went downhill. Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers had both of their offenses rolling
in the first half and neither looked like they would be stopped. Right before the end of the half the Bears had an opportunity to score but a key play in the game changed the momentum. Tight end Martellus Bennett caught a ball over the middle and
extended his hands close to the goal line but was ruled just short of the end
zone. Right before half time this would have given the Bears huge confidence going into the second half but instead it felt like a punch to the gut.
The
second half for Cutler was one he would like to have back, throwing two
interceptions that both lead to points for the Green Bay offense. Sometimes
balls get deflected and take a bad bounce in the air but the second
interception can’t happen. Marshall and Cutler need to be on the same page so a
costly turnover doesn’t happen again. It could be that Cutler and Marshall haven’t
practiced and this throws of timing and the routes that should be run. A
positive on Sunday was that the run game finally got going. Matt Forte was
torching the Packers defense when he ran for 122 yards on 23 carries. Another positive
would be the play of tight end Martellus Bennett who caught 9 balls for 134
yards. He has been the one consistent player this year and hopefully he can
sustain it. Those were the only positives that came from this game everything
else really needs to be forgotten.
My view of the game on Sunday. |
The
defense has A LOT of work to do. Watching the defense from the stands was like
watching a scared high school team play the best team in the state. Players
were scrambling at the last minute to cover a receiver, lining up late on the
line of scrimmage, and just getting burned on routes. Green Bay’s offensive
line had no trouble with the pass rush. Not one defensive lineman came close to
Rodgers the whole game and if they did by some lucky chance get close, they couldn’t
finish the play. A holding call saved the Bears when Rodgers escaped the rush, made a few people miss and threw across his body in the left corner of the end zone
and was caught by the Green Bay receiver. The Bears need to get some kind of
pass rush going or its going to be a long season for Chicago,
The
Bears will travel to Bank of America Stadium where they will play the Carolina
Panthers, who are also 2-2. The Panthers will be looking to get back on track
after being destroyed the past two weeks. The Bears better be ready to face a
defense led by Luke Kuechly and a quarterback who can make plays with his feet
in Cam Newton.
